The Design Brief Many years ago, Ian Maley from Wilderness Equipment in Western Australia, designed the Rucksack which became the famous SAS-Mk6. It was the most advanced Military pack of its day and had an internal frame that could bend and flex with the wearer, and a harness shaped to human form.
Today, some ten to twenty years later, the SAS-Mk6 users have gravitated to Crossfire. The preserved and superbly maintained equipment of countless Exercises and Operations has started to deteriorate, until now!
It was an obvious direction to update the Classic - and Ian and Crossfire have poured resources and expertise into the finest Military Pack Ian has ever designed. It is the "Dukz Gutz" of Field Packs.
Today, it is necessary to incorporate the flexing and comfort of an internal frame, blended with the ventilation and adaptability of the acceptable external frames. Fortunately, we were advised and supported by Frank Howell of DEI , in the proud State of Maine in the US of A.
The DG-6 is a completely new Class of rucksack. You could define it as an exposed internal frame ". DEI and Crossfire reworked the famous MOLLE IIIA polymer frame and managed to spring tension it to flex with each step under load. A Soldiers' hips and shoulders are no longer forced to work against each other. Movement is now natural, vastly reducing the muscle fatigue incurred with the old rigid frames. The DG-6 can now transfer weight from side to side with each step, subtly flexing in the airspace behind the wearer.
It must be emphasized, too, that the compound used today in the polymer MOLLE frames is vastly different from the prototypes of yesteryear. DEI have directed considerable engineering resources into refining polymer types and frame shapes to provide the detailed design of todays' MOLLE IIIA into its extraordinary flexible strength, It is highly doubtful that any rigid alloy and steel ALICE frames have applied DEI's “Finite Element Analyses " that makes such a difference in strength, flexure and safety.
Rigorous testing has yet failed to break a MOLLE IIIA frame, even after considerable effort. Should you be able to do so - we will supply a new one with an accompanying wall certificate!
