For several years there has been a fabric being used to cool down athletes. It is made from polyester fiber and when you wet it (and put it on your skin’s surface) when you are heated, the moisture will cool you via an evaporative cooling process. This will also do the same for a dog.
Dogs, for the most part, have dark colored coats and when the sun is bright during the summer months the dark surface of their coats will absorb the sun’s rays and can cause them to overheat.
The Reflective Dog Jacket is snow white so it will automatically reflect the sun’s rays as the white surface of the snow does which is why snow does not melt. Then, if you wet the fabric—and basically ring it out, it will further cool the dog.
The picture is Cookie, my standard poodle whose coat is black. When appropriate I put it on her to keep her cool.
The fabric is extremely durable and is completely launder-able and will last for years no matter how much use you give it.
I have seen other dog jackets that are supposed to do the same thing, but they fall short of the mark because they are colored versus white and will absorb the sun’s rays and they are form fitting which means the heat that the dog’s body is generating is trapped within the supposed cooling vest whereas mine is loose fitting. This not only allows the heat the dog is generating to more easily dissipate but the wet fabric stays wet longer. Therefore, the need to wet the fabric often is reduced. Hence the dog stays cooler and more comfortable longer.
