A few years ago one of my customers in Alaska told of an experience he had that really surprised me. He had flown his float plane from his home in Wasilla, Alaska to a remote lake to hunt sheep or goat. Having gotten a kill he returned to his plane. The weather that he experienced coming out of the mountains was extremely rainy. Under the circumstances he could not fly out so he set up his tent and got into his light weight down bag. Unfortunately it was wet and he was shivering. He remembered that he had his Wiggy’s over bag from his Super Light FTRSS. He proceeded to put the down bag inside the over bag. As he explained to me in 15 or 20 minutes he was warm and went to sleep. Eight hours or so later when he got up and noted that the down bag was essentially dry.
Now, if anybody had asked me prior to my hearing his story if that could happen I would have said not a chance. But I have learned quite a lot over the years from customers about the performance of my bags. That said, I believe it would certainly be in the best interest of down bag owners to acquire a Wiggy’s over bag so they can protect their down bag not only from outside moisture but more importantly from the moisture they are generating from their own body. It only stands to reason that if the bag is wet and your body heat drives that moisture out of the bag all the while when you are continually producing more moisture that is a good thing. This means that the moisture you are producing while in a dry down bag will not stay in the bag if you have a Wiggy’s over bag over the down bag. I am just trying to help the down bag owners out until they decide to get the complete Wiggy system.
