-40 LEATHER SUPER BOOTS BY TIMBERLAND
But first an email I just received when I sat down to write about the -40 super boots
Dear Jerry,
I’ve used Wiggy’s products for years but still marvel at the performance of your insulation. A recent incident while deer hunting proved again there’s nothing like Lamilite.
I’d overslept and was pressing to reach my tree stand before sunrise. I reasoned I would save precious minutes if I didn’t stop to put on my Lightweight Waders. Partway across the stream I slipped and flooded both boots. The water was so cold I considered an abort but then remembered something in my backpack I thought might save the day.
By the time I reached my stand the water had saturated my UNLINED leather pac boots, several inches of Fossil Ridge Bibs, my Sun Walkers, and two pairs of Lamilite Socks. I unpacked my Wiggy’s Mukluks and put them on over the wet mess. The wind chill temperature was about 10°. I wouldn’t say my feet felt cold but they weren’t warm. After two hours I felt a patch of warmth at the top of each foot. The warmth spread slowly around my feet then up my lower legs. The temperature never rose above freezing, yet I was able to sit all day!
Back on the ground, the mukluks felt dry. At home, my feet looked normal - the skin wasn’t puckered. Both pairs of Lamilite socks were damp. The foot sections of the Sun Walkers were wet, the shafts were very damp. My Fishnets, second layer, and L-12 bibs were dry.
Along with some dumb decisions that day I made a smart one - I packed my Wiggy’s Mukluks!
Grateful for Lamilite,
Pete Clark
LEATHER BOOTS FOR -40 IS A JOKE AND A SERIOUS ONE
About 20 years ago I was looking through the Cabela’s catalogue at the numerous boots they offered. There were a number of leather boots that were rated to -20 degrees all the way down to -100 degrees.
Over the next two weeks I took the time to call each manufacturer inquiring how these boots were tested and in all but one case they were either never tested and told me they were doing what other companies did or in the one case they had two guys walking some remote trail in Canada.
Within the next two years when I received the Cabela’s and reviewed their boot section there were no longer any temperature rating showing for any boot. I guess I made an impression.
The other day I saw by chance the -40 SUPER BOOT by Timberland. I went to their web site and it took me quite awhile to finally find some specs for the boot. I was specifically interested in the insulation. All I could find was that the boots were double insulated but not with a name for the insulation. Double insulated with what?
Anybody who buys these boots for almost $700.00 thinking they will have warm feet at any temperature close to -40 degrees is not dealing with a full deck, sorry but that is how I think.
I think the seller of these boots is definitely lying about their ability to perform. There are several technical reasons that I do not care to go into at this time but buying them for use in such conditions is dangerous
One more company of many lying about the product they make.
