FORTY FIVE YEARS IN THE MAKING
That is right; the above headline is from the Patagonia web site. Imagine Patagonia is now making down sleeping bags using the fictitious 850 fill down. They do not say if it is duck or goose down.
What is different about these down bags than all others already in existence is nothing other than basic appearance. The baffles are sewn in the length of the bag versus across the bag. The reason for this is cost. Less baffles are needed and what is sewn in are longer so manufacturing costs are reduced. However the fill is still down which does absorb moisture just like the down bags that have the baffles sewn across the bag.
You would think after 45 years of selling various products to people who use these products in the outdoors the powers to be at Patagonia would have learned that continuous filament fiber as in Climashield or Lamilite would if they want to get into the sleeping bag market, they would use the best insulating medium known to mankind; CONTINUOUS FILAMENT FIBER.
But as I have noted and written about people who today work in the outdoor industry have shown, they are for the most part brain dead. The area of their brain that should function to learn simply does not.
They can easily go to Sierra Trading Post (STP) to see all of the different brands of down sleeping bags that are sold at probably below manufacturers cost; STP is the dumping ground for all outdoor products that these companies can’t see. And down sleeping bags is one of them. The Patagonia people want to be right alongside them on STP. I predict they will be.
As for the people in the employ of Patagonia I categorically state they have enough knowledge of insulation as can fit in a gnat’s b***. They are marketing people who are trading on the company name since it has been around for 45 years. They believe that gives them license to state because of their longevity the products they make are good; yes good for nothing.
So, Yvon I hope you appreciate the free publicity that I have given you. I also hope you have a nice warehouse to store these bags because they are no different than all of the other down bags that have preceded you in the market place only to be replaced by Wiggy’s bags for the past 30 years.
Also remember that people in the USA really want to buy and support American companies that actually make products in America, you don't make any products in America; do you?
