THE ALL PURPOSE COAT
When I first wrote about the All Purpose Coat I said it would not be available until the first of May. Things have changed here at Wiggy’s. Production time has become available so we are now starting to produce the orders we have received thus far as well as making some stock for inventory.
I will continue to honor the $20.00 discount for all orders received before May 1, 2019.
After that date the price will be $120.00 per coat.
I expect we will start shipping during the first week of April.
Based upon all of the information that I have uncovered that debunks the nonsense of waterproof breathable (wpb) materials it has become obvious that the only way that moisture will move away from your skin surface is if there is space between the skin surface and the exterior of the garment. This space must have a small amount of insulation to hold the materials; lining and shell of the garment apart so the sweat can vaporize via the latent heat coming from your skin and once the sweat is in a vapor state it will move through the insulation and out of the garment since the fabric is not coated or laminated to any material.
There is but one form of insulation that has proven time and time again that does not inhibit that flow of vapor and that is silicone treated continuous filament fiberfill; i.e. Lamilite/Climashield.
If you happen to be wearing one of these All Purpose Coats in a down pour rain the rain water may very well get into the garment but from my experience and the experience of many others wearing Lamilite insulated parkas nobody has gotten cold from the rain water.
The difference between the All Purpose Coat and the Ducksback Zippered Coat is that the rain water does not get through the Ducksback fabric.
When I see ads for the unlined wpb rain jackets similar to the All Purpose Coat they are close fitting. They are made with enough room to wear a sweater or like garment under them if the weather changes towards a colder day. But prior to putting on that sweater the person is wearing a T-shirt and when the wind and rain come they may be pelted with the water and the garment is pressed against your skin and you do get cold, no doubt about it.
If you are carrying the Wiggy garment; All Purpose or Ducksback coat and it starts to rain you put it on and you get warm very quickly and the rain is not a problem, you stay warm. Keep in mind I am referencing mild weather conditions to begin with, and when it does rain in these conditions the temperature can drop quickly 10 to 20 degrees depending upon the elevation you are hiking in.
There is so much more to consider when making weather related garments than just a shell fabric. The garment has to compensate for the physical actions that are affecting the human body. In order for the garment to work the fabrics it is made from must also work to the benefit of the persons wearing these garments. ALL coated or laminated fabrics stifle or eliminate the ability of the fabrics that are processed in this manner from working when in their natural state of being i.e. not coated or laminated.
Of course there is no flamboyant wonderful story that can be created such as has been spouted for 40 years to get people’s attention when all you can say is here is a garment that basically keeps you warm and dry in inclement weather conditions.
I did see a program on one of the history channels about I believe 6 people who were trekking maybe in Alaska during the summer months and all of them had the expensive wpb jackets and all were experiencing being cold especially the women. I should have taken notes so I could be more specific but I didn’t. Maybe it will be rerun and if it is and I happen to see it I’ll have the notes.
All who have ordered the ALL Purpose Coats will receive their orders within two weeks.
Thank you for your business and trust in Wiggy’s.
