I do not believe the false information being presented to the general public about waterproof breathable fabrics is about to end any time soon. I read an article in this month’s issue of Specialty Fabrics REVIEW magazine about a company in Japan that is making a tent that is “breathable”. The fabric used comes from DSM Dyneema that is supposed to be waterproof and breathable. However it is also laminated to eVent . eVent is a Teflon film just like goretex that is laminated to nylon fabric or any fabric you chose. Having read the article I decided to call DSM only to find that all calls go through a security office and the guy who answered the phone had no idea who to transfer me too, so I gave up and looked up the phone number for eVent Fabrics only to get a recording machine. So I gave up calling them but did go to their web site and below am what I found.
What makes eVent better?
The critical difference between our technology and traditional waterproof/breathable fabrics is the billions of microscopic pores built in to our proprietary membrane that work instantly to vent water vapor (sweat) that builds up inside your apparel and footwear when you perform.
Gore Teflon film has 9 billion holes per square inch does eVent have more? I would like to know how these companies arrived at the figure of billions of hole in the first place?
We call this Direct Venting™ technology, and unlike other technologies, it doesn't need to get wet to work. It’s a 'dry system' that allows eVent fabrics to be fully waterproof and fully breathable – keeping you dry and comfortable in the widest range of temperatures and conditions.
I would like to know how it works to begin with since what is coming out of our pores is water in the first place. So if water cannot pass through these billions of holes to get in how does it get out?
Direct Venting™ technology is engineered to keep you in the ‘dry zone’ – a steady state of temperature and humidity that reduces the wild swings our bodies go through to stay in balance during physical exertion.
I have yet to know of any material that can keep you in a “dry zone” except maybe fishnets and keep your temperature and humidity in a “steady state”, even fishnets cannot do that, but they do help.
The result is that you’ll spend more time performing at your best and less time fussing with your gear. And when conditions are bad, that can make all the difference.
This paragraph is a bombastic statement!!!
Trust data more than marketing? eVent fabrics have been extensively tested in the lab, and the results speak for themselves.
Now we are getting some real information from them; laboratory testing. Don’t believe people testing because people testing demonstrate that the eVent laminated fabrics do not function any differently than goretex laminated fabrics? It can’t and it doesn’t.
All tech jargon aside, the best way to test out the benefits of eVent fabrics and our Direct Venting™ technology is to experience it for yourself. Find your perfect garment from one of our many brand partners.
Now you can see that they are promoting the purchase of a product made with the eVent film and hope you don’t return it when you discover it is no different than goretex. It is best to not waste your money on the garments in the first place.
As for the FSM Dyneema fabric I do not expect to ever know what it is nor do I care. What I am sure of is the tent does not work just like tents made 40 years ago using goretex didn’t work.
I believe the reality is that the two companies noted are immune to just accepting they have bogus, fraudulent products. Every retail store in the world is a co-conspirator in presenting to the general public garments made with these materials and will simply reframe from acknowledging the materials do not work as advertised and not buy the garments to sell. Why (?) because they make money selling them to unsuspecting people.
While I have presented to the public absolutely factual information about the fact that a single material made of at least two entities cannot form a material that will function as a waterproof and vapor permeable fabric these two companies as well as others will continue to falsely present them to the general public. So long as individuals choose to buy these garments retailers will continue to stock them.
The end result is always going to be the same with respect to rain garments; you will be wet inside the garment. And if you are wearing shoes with these materials in them you will have wet feet and during cold weather your feet will also be cold.
The following article is reprinted from SPORTEXTILES web site which I receive most days via email
Textile solutions provider Polartec has announced that it will exhibit at the forthcoming Première Vision exhibition in Paris (September 19-21), the first time it has done so.
I have no knowledge of Polartec company coming up with a
solution to any problem in the textile industry.
The company said the trade show was a “major opportunity” to
champion what it called ‘tech casual’.
They dream up new expressions and throw them at the wall
hoping they stick.
“Changes brought about by consumer behaviour have led to
Polartec taking a fresh approach to product development,” Gary Smith,
Polartec’s CEO, explained. “Millennials in particular have an expectation from
technology which no other generation has ever had.”
Maybe with their fresh approach they will not only come up
with a new product that has purpose but they will present it as it really is
versus what they have been doing for years. I have to agree with them that millennials
do have expectations, mostly unreal but they do have them.
He added that Polartec is faced with the challenge of
building the technology the consumer expects into the next generations of its
fabrics, while also retaining the fashion component. “Today’s consumer wants
performance apparel that doesn’t look like performance apparel,” he said.
The challenge they face is building anything that will work and they should not be concerned about the next generation because it is not here yet. Looking to the future clouds the present in the textile industry for these industry dreamers. We already see that so much of what is used these days in garments are materials that do not function the way the marketing companies represent them. These folks at Polartec are no different than the rest of the industry, they are that is all of them not paying attention to what exists in the present and working on ways to use these fabrics in ways that have been neglected for years. A perfect example is the Supplex fabric that has been available for years. Used properly it will make one of the best rain garments there is after DUCKSBACK. But it is old school these marketing people believe.
So it remains in the shadows of history at this time.
