AWARDING CONTRACTS
A number of years ago I was visited by a young guy maybe 30 years of age on his way back home in a believe Santa Fe, N.M.
He wanted to visit with me because he had received a grant from the U.S. Navy to develop an insulation for sleeping bags. if memory serves correctly, I spoke with the Navy guy.
I gave this guy more time than he deserved in offering an education in why continuous filament was simply the best. I do not remember what materials he was actually working with but I did tell him in no uncertain terms he really had nothing. He had been given a one million dollar grant. To this day I have never heard from him or what was accomplished.
We now know that a government agency has given out initially two awards one about two years ago for one million dollars which has been a dud and now the same company has been awarded a ten million dollar amount for the same purpose to develop a new insulation. It has an expiration date of 3 years from now.
Trust me the oros company even though they are in cahoots with northeastern university will still not have an insulation and if they do it will not be an acceptable product.
These people as well as all others who make fiberfill batting for insulation purposes haven’t a clue as to how insulation is supposed to work. The only synthetic fiberfill that truly performs as an insulation is continuous filament fiber.
No other insulating medium duplicates down and then surpasses it. When you put n a down parka or get into a down sleeping bag you experience a unique feel, that is the down surrounding your body, I like to say it loves you immediately. When you get into bed with a down comforter you have the same experience. But after awhile the love affair ends. Why[?] because down is a magnificent absorber of moisture. Once moisture is absorbed by the down the moisture then becomes a conduit to absorb heat, where does the heat come from, you who is wearing the down parka or in a down sleeping bag. Comforters are in a home so while the same absorption of moisture takes place but the heat in a home does dry it. If you are out in the field for any amount of time in cold conditions the moisture never dries but it does freeze so you have ice build up in the garment or sleeping bag.
Now for continuous filament fiberfill. The way I use it and the weights I use in the garments and sleeping bags I make when you put one on or get into a bag you have the same experience you have with down, it LOVES you. But there the similarity ends. What you do not realize is the fact that your body moisture migrates through the insulation [LAMILITE] out of your garment or sleeping bag so it can not be a conduit for absorbing your body heat.
In order to accomplish the same experience of wearing a synthetic garment or using a synthetic sleeping bag the insulation [LAMILITE] cannot be resin bonded or be chopped up because you need a certain density of soft fibers which Lamilite is that molds around you. When the Lamilite molds around you there is very little air space between you and the Lamilite insulation. You now understand why Lamilite loves you and it is not a fleeting love affair as down is, it is for years to come.
The problem the civil servants engaged in this foolishness of trying to find or have some one or company develop an insulation, something they have zero knowledge of and me is the simple fact that I already have the product they are looking for. Because of that they can’t give me any money which they want to give to someone, anyone or whom ever. So, these civil servants will in years to come continue to waste our taxpayer dollars as they are currently doing.
Personally, I am of the belief nothing will change since I have since 1968 been showing them Lamilite and they have tested my sleeping bags and this has gone to no avail.
AFTER OUR GOVERNMENT HAS EXHAUSTED ALL POSSIBILITIES WITH THEIR FAILURES WIGGY'S WILL STILL BE AROUND MAKING THE BEST THAT CAN BE MADE!
