MORE NAMES FOR CHEAP CHOPPED STAPLE FIBERFILL FOR SLEEPING BAG INSULATION
I came across a brand of sleeping bag I did not know existed. They do not show on their web site as far as I could find where the bags are made. So I went to the rei web site and there they were and rei shows that they are imported but does not show a country of origin, Asia I expect. Anyway the fiberfill which is chopped staple fiber they state is a premium synthetic trade named stratofiber. I guess it is possible that they are purchasing a premium quality fiber, but I doubt it, but it is still chopped staple. Chopped staple fiber regardless of quality is still chopped staple fiber and has to be used as a quilted product. So you have the built in cold spots.
Rei shows these bags selling in the neighborhood of $200.00 or more. I did ask rei if they had any bags made in USA and the answer is no, which I knew.
This stratofiber filled bag also has what they call thermo gills that can be opened to vent warm air. They are redundant as far as I am concerned since all of the warm air will move out of the top of the bag quite quickly through all of the stitching. These thermo gills reminded me of the IV openings I build into my hypothermia bags. Maybe they want to be ready when someone in their stratofiber filled bags starts getting hypothermic. Just a thought!!
As I see it the desire for some companies to make sleeping bags is very strong as so many try but all are never successful. Why because they do not make bags that perform regardless what they claim. They choose not to look into using the best fiberfill that is available to them which is Climashield or Lamilite. Why the attitude of keeping their heads in the sand (I am being polite) because they want to make product as cheap as possible which means Asia and chopped staple fiberfill products that require all of them to dream up their own name that they hope will capture someone’s attention.
Maybe one day one company will wake up and see the light after they have removed their head from the sand.
