NEUROPATHY
In the textile industry there is a significant amount of development activity dealing with fabrics that supposedly when made into products such as shoes, insoles and socks that will in some manner alleviate some of the problems and the supposed developers are keying on the diabetic.
Last week I wrote about a company in N.Y.C. in league with gore. This week I read an article about a company in S.F. named Siren who have created a textile with micro sensors embedded direct into fabric. This fabric is made into socks which will allow diabetics to continuously monitor for foot injuries.
I quote from the article; “Siren Diabetic Socks continuously monitor foot temperature so diabetics can detect signs of inflammation, the precursor to diabetic foot ulcers. Monitoring foot temperature is clinically proven to be the most effective way of catching foot injuries, and up to 87 percent (I tried calling the company to ask how they arrived at the 87 percent number, no answer at either number listed on their web site, but I am sure it would not have received a logical explanation if at all, if someone did answer.) more effective at preventing foot ulcers than standard diabetic foot care”.
A diabetic can subscribe to the Siren Company to receive 5 pairs of the new Siren Diabetic Socks shipped every 6 months for a starting price of only $19.95 per month. Such a deal for what I believe is a product that will do nothing for any diabetic.
I believe all of these “new” products are nothing less than a scam.
I have been doing a significant amount of research into the subject of foot care whether it is for people who have healthy feet or diabetics. By the way all of the information you can ever want to know is readily available on the internet, my source.
People with diabetes as far as I know complain more about foot problems than any other problem that occurs when one is diabetic. The reason for the foot problems is the deterioration of the blood vessels bringing blood into the feet. The first sensation that is experienced is cold feet. After that the problems get much worse, ulcers, bunions, sores that take forever to heal if they ever do, cracking skin due to dry feet and interestingly a lack of lubricating oil that is naturally produced by our body, deformities and bone and joint pain. Of course the ultimate end is if a foot has to be amputated.
Many years ago while being examined by an orthopedic surgeon he told me the worse thing a person can do is not get exercise. The body produces lubricating fluid at the joints and if you are a couch potato and do not move much the joints get stiff because without the movement or some form of exercise the lubricating fluid is not produced.
I am not a doctor but I have read a substantial amount of information on this subject and I have come to a conclusion, the best way to maintain foot health specifically if one is diabetic is to keep feet warm. In order to keep the millions of blood vessels that are below the knees healthy which will inturn keep the foot healthy is to keep the blood flowing into the feet warm and of course while the blood is in the foot itself it needs to be warm. The blood supply getting to all of the veins will be bringing oxygen as well as whatever nutrients it normally brings to the various parts of the body.
If the blood supply is there as it is for any nondiabetic person it will also bring the lubricating fluid which will keep the foot skin from cracking and be more supple. One article suggested using vaseline on the bottoms of the feet. According to the information I read from the Mayo Clinic never soak feet in water. That alone tells me the use of any shoe that has a film such as goretex in it would be tantamount to soaking your foot in water all day long if you are wearing them all day. Wearing cotton or wool socks that do absorb moisture is also subjecting feet to a soaking of sorts.
Even if you are not a diabetic as you age as I am finding the weakest part of your body is your feet. I sometimes think about my getting lost in the blizzard with temperatures ranging from -20 to -50 Fand what would have been my outcome if I wasn’t wearing my mukluks, I probably would have become coyote meat because my feet would have frozen.
When I started making the Lamilite socks I basically knew I had a good product, but during the past 2 years that I have been selling them I have learned via customer comments and doing the research that these socks because they keep feet warm and allow moisture to get away from the feet keep healthy feet healthy and help people with foot problems regardless of the reason fare better than they do with traditional wool or cotton socks. They certainly help diabetics.
I recommend the 13 inch socks since they are higher on the leg than the 8 inch socks to wear to bed. Here I can speak from experience since I have until about a year ago had foot cramps and that has so far come to an end. I think it is undeniable that keeping the blood flow warm going into the foot area of the body is totally beneficial just like blood flow to any other part of the body. If you are young and are not diabetic but wear boots that are supposed to be well insulated and have discovered they are not, wear them enough and your cold toes become more and more susceptible to the cold, meaning you will have cold toes faster. I must point out that this was from the gore scientists who work in the $15,000,000.00 laboratory they are so proud of. While my feet are okay after my experience my fingers are not, they start shutting down when the temperature is 40 degrees and lower, so I wear gloves until 25 degrees and then mittens.
If any of my readers is a doctor and find what I have written to be somehow out of line, I would appreciate your comments as it is not my intention now or ever to mislead. My customers are much too important to me.
What I think of the companies such as Siren or the company involved with gore is that they are playing on the fears of people with their disingenuous statements about the products they are offering in a way that they will save your life potentially. But that is the way companies are these days, by the way the Siren Company published that they have raised $3.4 million in seed funding for the diabetic continuous monitoring socks from some venture capitalists. They were in my opinion sold a bill of goods or are only interested in the potential market of diabetics without regard for these people. SHAME ON YOU!!!
