FIRE RETARDANT AND OTHER CHEMICALS
I keep receiving calls asking if I use FR chemically treated materials and /or materials with any number of chemicals applied to them.
I have previously written that I do not nor have I ever made sleeping bags with FR chemical treatments. I further have written that I use pure finish materials which means that after they have gone through the dyeing and finishing of the material it does not have any other chemical such as a dwr or durable water repellent finish applied to them.
I find it very interesting the vast number of people inquiring about chemical additives applied to fabrics used by manufacturers because they are either already chemically sensitive or are interested in avoiding becoming chemically sensitive.
I also find it disconcerting to know that there is an increase in the use of chemicals being applied to fabrics that are supposed to enhance the performance (?) of the fabric. It is unfortunate for the consumer who first of all discovers that the garment made with this new chemical treatment does not do what is said about it in the advertising and it is also unfortunate for the consumer who purchases the garment when they realize they are suddenly developing allergies or have become chemically sensitive.
Of course the chemical companies are quick to point out their chemicals are “environmentally friendly”. Sure since the chemicals have leached into your skin so they are not in the environment.
The reality as I see it is there is a growing population of chemically sensitive people and these people are younger and younger.
One girl wrote to me about her chemical sensitive situation and wanted to know if I would send her a sample of my material to test. Generally people who have asked for the material will sleep with it and if they do not react they are comfortable buying a Wiggy bag. I also recommend going to the web sites for chemically sensitive people and read what they say about Wiggy’s bags. I never have a problem sending out samples. It is much easier than buying a bag and then finding out there is a problem. So if you are inclined to find out for yourself ask for a sample.
Just so you know the same materials used for the sleeping bags are also used for the other insulated products made by Wiggy’s.
For what it is worth I recommend pure finish cotton, bamboo, wool for wearing when doing aerobics exercises. Then just wash the garments and they will last for a long time and so will you since you will not have chemicals leaching into your skin. However, if you want to have definite body odor I strongly recommend that you purchase any of the polyester aerobic garments readily available with the many chemicals that are applied to them.
