CHEMICALS KILL
Durable water repellent
Fluorine-containing durable water repellent makes a fabric water-resistant.
Durable water repellent, or DWR , is a coating added to fabrics at the factory to make them water-resistant (hydrophobic). Most factory-applied treatments are fluoropolymer based; these applications are quite thin and not always effective. Durable water repellents are commonly used in conjunction with waterproof breathable fabrics such as Gore-Tex to prevent the outer layer of fabric from becoming saturated with water. This saturation, called 'wetting out,' can reduce the garment's breathability (moisture transport through the breathable membrane) and let water through. (The wetting out doesn’t reduce what cannot happen in the first place.) As the DWR wears off over time, re-treatment is recommended when necessary. (You can waste your money on products that are claimed to be water repellents.)
Older methods for factory application of DWR treatments involve applying a solution of a chemical onto the surface of the fabric by spraying or dipping.
More recently the chemistry is applied in the vapor phase using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) machinery. The advantages of CVD include eliminating the use of hazardous and environmentally harmful solvents in the application process; requiring less chemical; and an extremely thin waterproof layer that has less effect on the natural look and feel of the fabric.
AND FINALLY
The fluoropolymer molecule is structured something like a Christmas tree, with a long central trunk and fluorinated side chains, which are toxic, branching off.
All of the above information was found on the internet, a marvelous source of information. I also came across a 20 page publication dealing with the chemicals used to make water repellent chemicals and the dangers to the people who make the stuff are too numerous to mention.
ANTI CANCER LIVING a book written by Lorenzo Cohen and Alison Jefferies
I will be quoting out of this book since the authors are very firm as to a major reason we humans develop cancer. I have yet to finish the book but it is excellent for those who have cancer and those who hope they never get it. The first step in preventing yourself from getting it is to read the book and the second step is to apply what you have learned from the book.
I have written in recent articles how I believe the significant number of chemicals we are subject to IS in my opinion the major catalyst for people developing cancer.
I quote the following from the book; ‘Alison and I grew up hearing the advertising slogan, Better Living through Chemistry. This was the bright, happy jingle of the DuPont Chemical Company from 1935 until 1982—when “through chemistry” was finally dropped. If you grew up during that period, you know that “chemistry” was supposed to encompass all the benefits and convenience that chemicals and additives brought to modern life. By the 1980s, however, when the slogan had come to be regarded as a cynical catchphrase, most of the world was finally catching on that perhaps living in a world chock-full of chemicals wasn’t better after all.
Nowhere is the irony of this more obvious than in the realm of cancer care. Over the past thirty of so years, we’ve established a direct link between man-made chemical agents and the onset of cancer. Yet we still mainly treat these chemically triggered illnesses with other chemicals in the form of chemotherapy. We get sick because of chemicals and we try to get better with chemicals. In the meantime, the costs to our bodies, our health, and our overall quality of life continue to mount.
What if there is a better way?
We now have some of the scientific data we need to make choices that sidestep many of the industrial and environmental chemical toxins laced into the food we eat, THE CLOTHES WE WEAR (I emphasized), and the products we use in our daily lives.”
Since I had television from about 1947 and on I did get to see those DuPont words and heard the jingle maybe thousands of times. In the first four chapters they give accounts of a number of people who had and still do incurable cancers that were supposed to end their lives within 18 months but they changed the eating habits from processed foods to natural foods which you can buy at any fresh market that sells organic foods. They ended eating red meats and sugars to mention two.
They talk about the increased incidence of the youth of America of all forms of cancer. We all have the cancer genes in our bodies and the volume of chemicals we are subjected to is incredible. Get a copy of the book, you will not regret it.
I have exposed the names of a number of chemical companies serving the outdoor industry and they all make chemical combinations that are supposed to do this or that. However, and this is my opinion they all have one thing in common they all have cancer causing agents in their mixtures. As I noted above that the mixture for the water repellent formulas are toxic how can the finished formula not be? In my opinion it is, I now have even more reason to continue to buy PURE FINISH fabrics.
