KEEPING FEET HEALTHY
How best to keep feet healthy? Keep them dry!!!
Recently I was asked about the best products that can be worn to keep feet comfortable at temperatures as low as -65 degrees F.
My initial response was as follows; first layer is my Lamilite socks, versus the best merino or other wool that exists. Why because all moisture coming out of the pore of the foot are absorbed by the wool fibers and that is where the moisture stays. The Lamilite socks are made from nylon fabric sandwiched on either side of the Lamilite fiberfill. The moisture will easily pass through the two fabrics as well as the Lamilite so the skin surface stays dry. With the wool it will continue to absorb the moisture until it is saturated and the result IS the continued absorption of the heat generated by the foot, since the materials; wool and moisture never equal the temperature of the foot so they continue to absorb the heat. The end result IS cold feet. The retention of this moisture will also be home for fungus or other ailments to develop such as blisters, etc. with dry feet you will not experience these forms of problems.
My next suggestion was a pair of Lamilite insulated leather boots. With them all of the moisture will still continue to move as a vapor through the Lamilite lining of the same weight as the socks to the leather and then out. I then pointed out if the boot had a film lining it, I chose not to mention goretex, and it would not get out of the boot. I further pointed out people who wear wool or heavy cotton socks in boots that are film lined find themselves in a pool or water in their boots which further contributes to developing unhealthy feet. Since the Lamilite boots are specifically made without any film moisture is always free to leave the boot. My Lamilite boots and Lamilite socks perform well in temperatures as low as 0 degrees f.
My third suggestion was to wear the over boots if you were interested in going into a temperature zone as low as -35 degrees F. The moisture that has come out of your foot may very well condense between the leather and the lining of the over boot, but it will not have any negative effect. I have personally spent many days at 12500 feet where I was hunting wearing the over boots in the stated temperature so I know how well they perform. If you are wearing ANY brand of pack boot with a recommendation that they will work at a temperature of -35 degrees F the chances of having cold feet is 100 percent. The reason is because 100 percent of the moisture that comes out of your feet will be well confined inside the boot where it WILL like a sponge absorb as much heat as your feet produce resulting in having cold feet. A byproduct of all of this moisture retention will also contribute to unhealthy feet. It is very probable if you are out in the elements long enough your feet WIL become frost bitten even though you may not know it. I have seen guys with black toes and did not know it until they removed their boots. In literally ALL cases their socks were soaked and the same with the inside of their boots.
And my final recommendation was the Joe Redington Mukluks for extreme cold which I stated are worn in the coldest regions on the earth; -70 or -8 degrees F. I cannot tell you how many pair I have sold to people who work in Antarctica from several countries around the world. Sales in the arctic are considerably more since the people wearing them are not only field workers such as those who work in the oil fields but also people in sport, such as dog mushers worldwide. When I was lost I was wearing a pair and I walked through streams when the temperature was -20 F and lower and never knew it was cold. When I removed the Mukluks there was water not, ice in them so I can personally attest to their performance. Of course it helps if the person in these extreme conditions is otherwise dressed for them which mean’s the Mukluks work in concert with the rest of the clothing being worn, I hope all Lamilite insulated. What is worn on ones feet inside the Mukluks should always be Lamilite socks and Lamilite boots! When I was lost it was prior to Lamilite socks and boots so while my feet were wet to this point I was okay, but I have no doubt had I not been rescued and been out for a few more days I would have had a very serious problem due to wet feet.
I strongly believe there are millions of people with foot problems and they are not necessarily aged when the body started to wear out. The proof that I have of believing as I do is in front of each of us who goes into a drug store. Just look at the selection of remedies for foot problems that are available today. Forty years ago their might have been 5!!! You justifiably may ask why this is so. The answer is a simple one the fictitious “WATERPROOF AND BREATHABLE” nonsense that has permeated the footwear industry!!! Every company that offers this NON-FUNCTIONING component to be installed in their footwear is the enemy of every person who buys footwear. They are in unison perpetrators of developing and having UNHEALTHY FEET!!! You can also add into the mix the sock companies who profess to have the greatest and warmest wool socks. As explained above wool is a glutton for absorbing moisture. It readily and quickly converts it from vapor to liquid. To all who have expensive high quality wool socks, when you take them of at the end of a day what do you feel in them? Moisture! Where did it come from, your feet, and where is it going, while you have them on and are wearing the shoes it goes nowhere! This becomes the excellent breeding ground for fungus. Then you can go to the drug store and chose which may help to heal the condition.
If you want healthy feet, keep them as dry as you can while you are wearing footwear, and as far as I am concerned the only socks that allow that to happen are Lamilite socks.
When it comes to boots there are many choices out there but almost all have a film in them while the Lamilite boots do not. Lamilite boots are made in the U.S.A. and can be re-soled and ALL those from every other company have molded soles so when the sole wears out regardless of the condition of the upper you throw it away.
If you want healthy feet late in life you have to start taking care of them early in life.
I have no idea what the question will eventually do since we are now starting to experience summer and he is thinking winter.
Also, I wonder if the pharmaceutical companies are paying a commission to the companies that make and sell the w/b materials as well as all of the shoe companies that use the stuff. Having spoken with several people at some of the footwear companies I know firsthand that it is widely known throughout the footwear industry that w/b does not work, has never worked and never will work but they in total have so far CHOSEN not to end their use of this product. That leads me to the conclusion they DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. What if a major portion of the population chooses not to buy from cabela/basspro/dicks/rei/llbean/ or any number of existing retailers that carry any boots that have the film in them. That might give the manufacturers pause to think about what they are doing.
If you are desirous of UNHEALTHY feet then I strongly recommend any footwear that is lined with a bogus waterproof and breeeeathable film.
One last thought; if anyone in my audience works for a boot company or retailer that sells this garbage make a copy and pass it on to the buyers. If anyone out their works for a film company such as gore you can copy it with my compliments and show it to say Bobbie.
