DOES WILMINGTON, DEL. BREED ERRONEOUS MANUFACTURERS
There is a trade publication “SPECIALTY FABRICS REVIEW” that I receive monthly. They have a category titled “BREIFINGS” where they show new products introduced into the consumer market place. I have on occasion written to them asking why they write about products that are not what the manufacturer of the product claims. They never actually require some proof of the products performance capability when they by virtue of publicizing a product that it does not know if it performs.
That is the case with a product they wrote about in the current November 2016 issue. The title for the article is “On the cold front”. The first line of the article claims the following, and I quote; “Cold kills more people than all other weather-related causes combined, according to the National Center for Environmental Health”. I do not know how true that statement is but it matters not as to the product that this company is making.
The company XeroGear, a Wilmington, Del. Manufacturer has the answer and I quote; “XeroVest, an emergency garment that is compact and weighs just two ounces, making it easy to carry in a backpack, pocket or glove compartment”.
Further according to their published information I quote the following; “XeroVest warms the body using inflatable, air-insulated technology, featuring a network of cross connected cells that inflate quickly through a simple one-way mouth piece on the vests collar. Inflation creates a warm, insulating layer of trapped air, while conforming to the person’s shape to keep the body’s core warmer longer to prevent hypothermia. The body’s core stays insulated while moist air escapes through the vest’s integrated vent holes”.
The person who developed (?) this product has absolutely no knowledge of how many times this has been tried in the past. Even the neighboring company in Wilmington known as Gore tried this several years ago and obviously they had no success because it does not work. There have been others but it was so long ago that I do not remember who they were.
In all cases of companies making a vest in this manner they do not understand that it is absolutely necessary to have a filling material such as Lamilite between the shell and lining of the garment to trap the air that is heated by the body that keeps a person warm. The open spaces of the garment that appear as quilting except that the spaces are filling with the air you breathe out. As for the moisture escaping, that is simply not true. It will very quickly condense and liquefy in those quilts like spaces.
The fact that this company is in Wilmington, Del. Leads me to wonder if this company is taking a page out of the Gore book about marketing a bogus product, will there be a third company someday located in Wilmington?
HIKING BOOTS
The Chukka boots will be delivered on Monday so all orders will ship before Thanksgiving.
I have made a point of bringing in small sizes that will a woman’s foot since I have had many women ask for them.
Keep in mind that almost all of the hiking boots I have seen have molded soles so when the sole wears away the boot gets thrown away. With my boots when you wear out the sole just have them resoled.
