FOLLOWUP TO THE UNINTELLIGENT INSULATION

One reader sent me a link to the skyscrape article that shows how the material works. You have two fabrics joined every two inches with glue lines similar to how I quilt two fabrics together only I put Lamilite between them.

One fabric moves according to it being heated so a tube shape is created. In the tube is air which now is supposed to increase the amount of insulation in the jacket. If you move in the jacket, you will cause the tubes to collapse forcing the heated air out thereby reducing the insulation. Unfortunately, the inventor of the unintelligent insulation is equally unintelligent in the field of insulation. Maybe Brent Ridley will take the time to read my web site, the owner of skyscrape and then he will become intelligent about insulation.

Now a history lesson. Many years ago, the gore company started making jackets that incorporated water and air proof goretex with channels and they were like bladders. You then had tubes that you cold blowup the jacket to increase the insulation. This gore product was a remarkably successful failure when they found out trapped air without insulation in the bladders did not work, at all!!!

How about the experience people wanting comfort when they camp and get ground pads that have tubes to blow up and then learn very quickly, they have cold backs and as a consequence they do not sleep. So much for air by itself being a worthwhile insulator.

I have been with guys at hunting camp who have come from all over the country with these inflatable pads and put them on a cot when the nighttime temperature was -20 F. The pad never lasted more than 30 minutes on the cot. Of course, they slept extraordinarily little because they did not have a Wiggy bag.

Years ago, some others tried to make insulated products that incorporated trapping air is a balloon configuration, but they never worked so nobody has ever seen these products.

In this day and age there maybe some other takers like ralph who will also learn the hard way that the intelligent insulation is really the unintelligent non-performing insulation.
