THE GORE FABRICS DIVISION SETS AMBITIOUS CARBON REDUCTION GOALS
How much carbon can gore reduce that will, if they can reduce any, make a difference? The following is where carbon is. Having read this article as well as others about carbon “footprint” I decided to research where carbon is mostly located and this is what I found.
Where is most carbon found?
ocean
But far and away the most carbon on Earth is stored in a surprising place: the ocean. There's estimated to be 38,000 to 40,000 billion metric tons of carbon in the ocean itself with a whopping 66 million to 100 million-billion metric tons of carbon in marine sediments and sedimentary rocks.
That is a lot of carbon and gore is going to reduce their producing carbon to a point it will somehow make a difference? I do not think so.
As a global leader in the production of outdoor apparel, we have a responsibility to protect the places where people work and play wearing our products.
These guys at gore are so full of themselves that they think (they really do not think) since they sell outdoor apparel companies “they” are the producer of the outdoor apparel. Since the bulk of the outdoor apparel is made in sweat shops in Asia how is gore protecting the places where people work and play. I further do not believe these people can afford these products.
We are contributing our fair share to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius. According to science, this is the threshold we must not exceed to avoid irreversible damage to our planet. That´s why we are setting ambitious, science-based carbon goals across both our own operations as well as our upstream and downstream activities and areas of influence:
The two-degree Celsius number came from a Yale economist, William Nordhaus written in a paper by him in 1975. He is NOT a climatologist. The title of the paper is “can we control carbon dioxide”. This is the threshold that science has adopted. Unfortunately, gore is not setting science based anything. Whatever they claim that they are doing is literally meaningless. They also do not know where they are going; upstream or downstream.
By 2030, we will reduce carbon emissions* originating from Gore's manufacturing sites and offices by 60%, from a 2016 baseline, and work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
This company may not be in business in the year 2030 let-a-lone 2050. This goes along with gore’s grandiose ideas such as making a single fabric composed of two or more materials that is of all things believe it or not both waterproof and breathable!
In addition, we target a
reduction of GORE-TEX product related emissions by 35% by 2030, also from a
2016 baseline.
There they go again with dates to take place in 2030.
(*carbon emissions as defined by GREENHOUSE GAS PROTOCOL)
Based on the Science-Based Targets methodology, we’ve calculated the carbon emissions attributable to GORE-TEX products. This helped us identify three initial areas of action to lower our carbon footprint:
Reduce energy consumption and introduce
renewable energy at Gore's manufacturing sites
Optimizing product design,
e.g. switching to more durable materials or membranes and textiles with a lower
footprint wherever fit for use
Working with our suppliers
to reduce their plant emissions by switching from fossil fuel generated energy
to renewable energy and increasing efficiency.
The greenhouse gas protocol is so complex that I have left it alone.
Science based targets mythology is what they are talking about.
I know they are saving energy at their manufacturing sites because the garments made with their stuff aren’t being made at the moment; coronavirus is the cause.
There are no more durable materials or membranes.
At this time, I do not believe there is a need to switch sources of energy because production in some areas of Asia is at a standstill. I have read that many of the factories have inventory beyond belief and they haven’t been paid for what has been made. It is so bad at these, factories haven’t they haven’t paid their employees, I understand.
I do not know if this promotional piece by the gore company is published for consumers to read or just industry folks, but that in my opinion is irrelevant. It is meaningless gibberish that they have come out with to give themselves something to crow about.
They are as disingenuous as any company can be.
