ABOVE IS AN AD FOR PATAGONIA JACKETS, I AM NOT ENDORSING THEM IN ANY WAY!
Yes down is Mother Nature’s insulating hero so long as it is a part of a living bird. Once removed from the bird down does not provide the same level of insulation. And as the advertisement says “when wet, can (this is an ad that I took directly off of the Patagonia web site that was e mailed to me) lose its loft and insulating power.” They refuse to acknowledge the absolute fact, truth that down loses 100 percent of its insulating capability when it gets wet and then what do you do? They have to rephrase the ad from “can” to “does” lose its insulating power. Most of the moisture comes from the body of the person wearing the garment, not from the atmosphere.
Please note the exorbitant amount of stitching all of which is cold spots. If you were to take a picture of someone wearing these garments with a thermal imaging camera both garments would appear to be the same color red, demonstrating heat flow away from the wearer of the garment.
Once again I present the truth that Lamilite/Climashield is the undisputed most efficient insulating material on the planet. Ounce for ounce nothing compares, and then adds in the fact that it is oblivious to water in any of its forms.
Patagonia may at one time have used Climashield but walked away from it versus getting to know and understand its potential as an insulating medium. They chose to go for chopped staple fiberfill instead that has demonstrated its lack of ability to perform. So the only alternative they go for is down an insulating medium that has been hyped as the best when in fact it is not by a wide margin. I believe this company and all the rest of the prime outdoor garment marketers refuse to see what is available to them that would be in their best interest. As it is said “you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make the horse drink”.
