NO QUILTING. NO COLD SPOTS. THIS IS DOWN.
That is the headline for a new jacket made for the Eddie Bauer Company someplace in Asia. Also in the ad is a thermal imaging photograph of a quilted down parka next to their non-quilted down parka. The non-quilted parka is definitely showing that it holds more heat. Imagine that, should I take credit for teaching them.
They are using “thindown” which I wrote about probably two years ago which is made in Italy. All it is, is small down clusters that have been resin bonded so going through the quilting process is unnecessary. Bauer calls their product or their jacket model “evertherm”.
They put a temperature rating on this jacket as low as -15 degrees F. they claim a total weight of 11.36 ounces. The picture show a man and woman wearing this garment and it is a “slim profile” as is stated in the ad. They are either very optimistic about the temperature capability or are embellishing the garments capability. Or still they are flat out lying. The “sheet” of down according to the ad is “1/8th inch thick”. Wearing this garment outside when the temperature is below zero degrees versus -15 degrees F is suggesting to me that you might have a death wish. Eddie Bauer might be rolling over in his grave if he knows how his name is being used for products that simply put do not have the ability to perform as suggested in this ad.
Another small head line in the ad is “the thinner puffy jacket”. Very creative thinker came up with this phase.
My Barron Grounds parka with the L-6 Lamilite will work well at -15 degrees F and it is basically one inch thick and the parka weighs between 20 and 32 ounces depending upon size.
This garment I can assure you must have been “tariff engineered” to keep it at a retail price of $279.00 with a hood and $249.00 without a hood.
The only thing about this ad that is accurate is a part of the head line; NO QUILTING. NO COLD SPOTS.
At least some one at this company is recognizing the benefit of making non-quilted outerwear. What they now have to recognize and accept is that they too can make Lamilite insulated non-quilted outerwear if they call me. And then of course they have all of the power of saying we have Lamilite/Climashield non-quilted outerwear, the most efficient that can be made. And they can get these jackets made in America if they want. There would not be any need to ship the Lamilite to Asia. If I can get all of the components necessary to make jackets in the USA they can too. But will they?
These companies that cater to the outdoor market place are now a days quick to embellish how well their products are going to work with fancy names and slogans. Then when their product does not perform as claimed they are faster to tell you about their “new and improved” product that is sure to work. They will tell you they have listened to their customers and corrected all of the deficiencies etc. Of course when they show up again they will have a new spin on the same “we fixed it” dialogue.
These people are as full of themselves as Jack Nicolson said in one of his movies “you couldn’t handle the truth”. And the truth is as far as I am concerned they do not care.
Look forward to more “tariff engineered” products in the future.
THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF MISLEADING INFORMATION
Designed by the some of the best minds in the outdoor retail industry, the Terramar Transport Merino and Matrix Merino base layer system utilizes drirelease® Wool with recycled polyester and innovative fabric construction to keep wearers protected and comfortable in the most challenging elements. The combination of drirelease® Wool and Terramar’s Climasense fabric technology sets a new standard for moisture-management and heat retention. The result is an expertly engineered blend of multi-denier and multi-staple length polyester with Merino Wool, keeping you warm while pulling moisture off the skin.
I called the company that sells the “drirelease” chemical and was unable to get any definitive information from them as to how is does what they claim. That is par for the course. Call gore and they too will not tell you how goretex works.
Here we go again with the phase “moisture management”. What they avoid recognizing is that the wool absorbs the body produced moisture and the moisture stays in the fabric as long as you are wearing the garment. Once the fabric has completed pulling the moisture off of your skin where does it go? No place unless you are not wearing any garment over there garment then it can evaporate away. But if you happen to be wearing a jacket it stays where it absorbed by the wool and retained.
Designed by some of the best minds in the retail industry is an outrageous statement. If they were so good at designing these garments with all the bells and whistles why aren’t they manufacturing and selling their products to all the retail stores? There is no such thing as “community mind” only individual minds.
Garments made with this material will not perform any better than any other close knit material made from natural fiber, synthetic fiber or a blend of both. But they will continue to evade their own erroneous verbiage and offer spin that is basically a lie.
These products are also probably made in Asia and as such are also “tariff engineered”.
None of these products will ever perform as fish nets do!!!!!
