PROOF THAT DOWN DOES NOT WORK
The following article was taken from the SNEWS outdoor news on line publication I receive daily. This article was published April 19, 2019. It high lights a product that has been created to help salvage down sleeping bags when you use one and experience cold, this product is supposed to help you stay warm, however in my opinion it will not work and offers proof of the fact that down bags don’t work. If they did this product would not be necessary, however it too does not work.
Elevator pitch: Sierra Madre Research Hot Pocket-when I went to the sierra madre web site I could not find a research section.
It’s an adventure-ready heating pad that doubles as a stuff sack for your sleeping bag.
Ride the elevator with Richard Rhette, CEO and founder Sierra Madre Research.
Let me know if this sounds familiar? Your evening meal still warm in your belly, the campfire now turned to red smoldering ashes. You fall asleep with a peaceful smile on your face, just to awaken suddenly at 2 a.m. by the shivering cold. You become restless, your teeth begin chattering, and you just can't get warm. You’re miserable, freezing, rolling in and out of pitiful sleep knowing this is going to be a long, dreadful night.
I watched the video they have showing the stuff sack and each bag removed from the stuff sack was down filled. So the comment above refers to down bags that do not work. I suspect he is referencing his own experiences using his own down bags.
There are options for getting warm. But so few of them actually include sleep. And isn’t that what you came here to do?
Actually there is an option, and that is a Wiggy’s bag, they do keep you warm.
Now, imagine the same scenario. Only this time when you wake up cold at 2 a.m., you simply drift right back to sleep in a warm and toasty slumber, because instant warmth is at your fingertips with just the push of a button.
This statement is outrageously incorrect. Once awake because you are cold and I would be surprised if someone makes it to 2 AM before waking.
We designed the Hot Pocket to be a multifunctional compression pack that doubles as a personal heater. So you’re able to pack, compress, and preheat your sleeping bag and then when you're ready to sleep just unzip the Hot Pocket to access its incredible warmth provided by two radiant heat panels.
“Incredible warmth” not hardly.
The Hot Pocket is powered by a LiIon battery and provides up to 6 hours worth of heat, enough for a solid weekend of adventure anytime the temps start to drop. Hot Pocket is solar-compatible and the power pack can also be used to charge your devices.
I do not know about powering devices but warming a person, it is not going to happen.
The cost for this product starts at about $89.00 if you pay for it on their kick starter program and it goes up into the hundreds of dollars. If this product is/were so good why must they try to get people to invest in it via kick starter program?
Having gone through their web site I noted they offer very light weight sleeping bags mostly down filled so I understand now why they built this heating pad. It is unfortunate that Richard is just one more individual whose knowledge of insulation and how the human body functions trying to solve a problem that was solved over 30 years ago and that was with the advent of two things; 1- continuous filament fiberfill now known as Climashield and the method of using it lamination so it is now also called Lamilite.
According to the numbers printed on the web site for future purchases of $367,716.00 or maybe they are only the pledges.
What we have here is one more attempt to help down “no sleep sleeping bags” work. Just one more individual attempting to extract money from people with a novelty expensive item that does not work for its intended purpose.
This guy does not know that the heat being produced by his heating pad will move away from the pad to the colder ambient air surrounding it. The heat does not go into the interior of the stuff sack heating what is inside on the stuff sack for very long.
A new p.t. barnum surfaces everyday with the specific purpose of extracting unsuspecting people from their money. Richard has come up with a useless product.
