BRILLIANCE COMES TO AN END
Henrik Brun invented the first vest in 1933. A commandant in the Norwegian army, Brun one day picked up two fishing nets previously used to catch herring and fashioned them into a garment that he correctly imagined would trap air close to the skin and provide insulation. It quickly found popularity in Norway King Haakon VII was among those who praised Brun's original design and a Norwegian company called Brynje (slogan: "Keeps you warm, dry and strong") remains one of the foremost manufacturers.
String theory: how the vest works
Dr Mark Lancaster, a physicist at University College London (UCL), says:
"All these fancy materials used to make sports underwear now are really just glorified string vests; Michael Hunt went up Everest in a string vest and a shirt, so they can't be that bad. The holes in the fabric channel out the sweat, while the remaining fibres trap warm air next to your skin.
"Any clothing has got fibres in it, which keeps you warm by trapping the air between them. On a string vest, the fibres are further apart, so it only works if you wear a shirt on top. "The advantage of a string vest over a normal close-weave one is that you don't overheat.
Henrik Brun in my opinion was brilliant. He invented something that will be used by humans for as long as humans exist on the planet. However his accomplishment is not necessarily used by Norwegian’s today.
The two articles that were sent to me deal with cold weather clothing that is worn by oil workers in Norway and the winter clothing worn by the Norwegian military.
The first article deals with the development of extreme cold weather clothing. They call the project and clothing “Arctic Protection”. The manufacturer of these garments is a company named Wenaas Workwear. They were established in 1930 and have become quite large and very successful. However, with all of their success for some reason they have hired a Norwegian consulting firm to develop this new cold weather clothing system. The firm hired for this project is also quite large as I discovered when I looked them up, SINTEF who is a research firm. The first two paragraphs of this article are very telling; I quote; [“WORK CLOTHING: Work clothing specifically tailored to Arctic conditions is hard to find. But industrial designers have now joined forces with researchers to create the perfect clothing concept. After they’re both consulting with men and women who have worked in gale force winds in the Barents Sea at temperatures as low as 20 degrees below freezing”.
“Today, deck operators on oil rigs in the Barents Sea are still wearing traditional cotton coveralls because work clothing tailored to Arctic weather conditions and associated risk factors simply doesn’t exist”, says industrial designer and SINTEF researcher Ole Petter Naesgaard”.]
It is obvious that this fellow Ole does not know about Wiggy’s workwear used by the oil field workers in Alaska. Actually he might know now since I emailed him suggesting he look at my web site.
As I reviewed the Wenaas web site I realized that they as is common with outerwear manufactured garments the “creators” of these garments are more interested in keeping snow and rain water out, versus dressing the individual with garments that allow the moisture out and also garments in their layering that are made from materials that do not absorb moisture to begin with. They use existing garments made from fleece that collects moisture and keeps it in the garments. Essentially those who are charged with developing this Arctic clothing outfit do not have any background in materials especially insulating materials. I wonder if they realize that the insulating medium is after the fishnet underwear the single most important material that is used in the manufacture of garments for4m use in cold weather..
When I looked through the Wenaas web site I looked for the insulation used and could not find any reference to it. I suspect all they use is chopped staple polyester fiberfill. Actually I know that they use chopped polyester fiberfill because they do not make the garments, they get them from Dickies, Carhartt, and a few other companies that only use chopped staple fiberfill quilted in the garments they make.
To further my education into what they do I noted that they currently use goretex and they intend to use goretex in the “new” arctic clothing project. This tells me they have never done any research into this material or any other. If they did and then questioned the sales people from companies like gore and requested proof of their products ability to work outside of a laboratory they might learn that it only works in a laboratory but never in the field.
They are also using woolen long underwear, negating the brilliance of Henrik Brun’s invention further signifying the end of positive thinking or signifying the beginning of “the end of thinking”. Of course I know they stopped thinking in the event they had been when they started using goretex in their garments.
Another area of concern for the SINTEF’s Oystein Wiggen is and I quote; “keeping the leg area around and below the thighs warm is critical to a wearer’s sense of feeling warm enough”. This person is a physiologist and should know that the thigh muscles are the largest in the human body and therefor create the greatest amount of heat. This person should but doesn’t know that the feet have to be kept warm and from what I have seen on the Wenaas website the boots they sell will not do that. If they supplied the proper insulated leg wear this would not ever be a problem. Since their knowledge of insulation is nil they have created a problem which they will never solve. Imagine having a ”sense of feeling warm enough”, just like the person who is hypothermic thinking they are warm enough, this person is a joke.
This Ole guy says and I quote; “Insulated thermal suits make the wearers sweat too easily when they are very active”. Ole if they are wearing fishnet long underwear with garments that DO NOT absorb and retain the sweat once it changes to liquid they will be very comfortable, but you don’t know or if you did understand why!
This guy as well as the majority of the people who have companies that claim to work with or sell garments or materials made from technical products do not understand that the only reference you can make about technical materials is that “technically they do not work as described” therefore whatever you make from these materials will technically not work. They all seem to have followed gore the leader in the textile industry with technical materials that technically do not work.
The following article I posted June 14, 2018 and it should be read by Ole and Oystein so they can begin to understand what clothing they should dress these oil industry workers in.
Interested in being alone?

ALONE
As many of you know about this Alone program I will not explain what it is other than to say it is about people who like to brutalize themselves in order to win about $500,000.00.
My interest in the program was based upon the fact that some of my customers advised me of some of the participants using Wiggy’s bags. I thought that is great because when the chips are down at least they have a bag that WILL keep them alive.
This morning I saw a small segment of people being positioned in Mongolia. I was particularly interested in what they were wearing. I am quite sure they will ALL begin to become uncomfortable in less than a week and the women faster than the men. Why (?) because they are ALL wearing clothing that will retain ALL of the moisture that their body’s’ are giving off.
I believe they the participants simply do not know the benefits of wearing as a first layer the fishnet underwear. Viewing the area from the helicopter that transports the contestants it is all dense forest and when you are in dense forest there is significant dampness.
Years ago when I was still living in S.C. I would sometimes go into the Smoky Mountains and I learned very quickly even in summer the ground is damp and the result is a negative effect so you need more insulation, etc. I strongly suspect these contestants are facing the same situation only more so since Mongolia does get extremely cold.
As we know the fishnets allow body produced moisture to move away from the skin surface so it stays dry and initially you stay warm. I would not be surprised to find out these contestants are wearing close knit form fitting underwear that just loves the body moisture and keeps it against your skin, so you and they will ALL get a chill. It is my belief these contestants also have the mind set of looking good.
Under the circumstances of what they are doing they have a need to wear EVERY ITEM OF CLOTHING that does not attract, retain or be affected by water ever. Their primary enemy is WATER in any form. Actually water is everybody’s primary enemy when they go into the bush.
They should be wearing Lamilite liner vest, Lamilite liner jacket, have a Ducksback Alaska Range Parka shell with all three zip in liners; L-3, L-6, L-12.
They should also have Lamilite 13 inch socks, Lamilite booties, ideally Lamilite boots and definitely Lamilite over boots. And Lamilite Leg Jackets as well as Lamilite mittens and the Lamilite balaclava.
Every item I have listed is completely oblivious to water, is light in weight and individually more efficient than any similar item made by any other company in the world. All they would need is one of each item and that goes for the socks since the items do not get smelly or get stretched out of shape.
And finally the sleeping bag should be the Ultima Thule and here I recommend either the regular wide body if you are 5 feet 9 inches or shorter and the long wide body it you are taller. That way you have plenty of room in the event you wear clothing in the bag. You would then know or find out that all moisture in the clothing will dissipate as in being driven out of the bag. This occurrence is well documented for years by hundreds or possibly thousands of Wiggy bag users. If you happen to be wet as one contestant was from falling into the ocean, he survived and won the competition because he was able to get into his Super Light as I recall and get warm and dry out.
I have a pipe dream that the organizers of this competition give each contestant a recommendation list of Wiggy’s products to use for their safety.
There was a guy from southern Colorado who visited me and told me where he was going, Vancouver Island. He purchased all of the items I recommended and was happily living in the bush. He chose to quit and go home because he missed his wife. Had he decided to continue I am very sure he would have won because he was completely unstressed with what he was doing.
There is no substitute for dry clothing because dry clothing will be far more efficient at keeping you warm than not so dry clothing.
Technically there is but one material that allows one to make garments that can be created for all temperature conditions from 70 degrees F to the coldest temperatures on earth. When used properly in the various weights it can be made and that material is Lamilite/Climashield. Its adaptability with any fabric that is not coated makes it perform better.
It was my intention to include the comments about the Norwegian military in this article but there is too much to review so it will be a second article this coming week.
