SOME PEOPLE WHO OWN A MANUFACURING COMPANY NEVER LEARN
I just took the time to learn about a company that makes down insulated “no sleep sleeping bags” located in the USA.
In the 1970’s or 80’s Marmot Mountain Works located in Grand Junction; Colorado became the face of goretex. They not only used it in outerwear but also sleeping bags.
The idea was to put the goretex on the inside of the shell fabric of the sleeping bag so it could keep moisture out while allowing the person using the bag moisture would get out of the bag. Remember the goretex was supposed to breathe. This action never happened.
Once the human produced moisture got into the down it was incapable of getting out of the bag. There were other problems as well such as the goretex fabric sticking to itself. Marmot’s time making bags with goretex was short lived.
To the best of my knowledge no other company selling “no sleep down sleeping bags” has ever made any, until now.
There is a California based company that makes “no sleep down sleeping bags” that are very expensive. The most expensive models that retail over $1300.00 and each have goretex laminated shell fabric in them.
For over 50 years or longer it is widely known that goretex is not water-proof and to use their term and breathable. I say vapor permeable, which goretex is not.
If you are wearing a ski parka made with goretex laminate fabric and you are skiing and generating sweat you will find that the sweat does not as a vapor, goes through the fabric, nothing in the form of moisture goes through the fabric.
Now you are in a “no sleep sleeping bag” that is down insulated and it has a goretex shell. You are in a resting position obviously not generating the sweat you do when skiing so how can the vapor you give off get out of the bag, it can’t. The $1380.00 “no sleep sleeping bag” has this goretex wind stopper fabric. Is this bag made to be used outside when it is windy? The stark reality is no body produced moisture can get out of the bag.
This company is with the support of gore offering for sale products made Gore Windstopper™ shell fabric provides maximum protection against external moisture. In the literature on the web site, it does not say breathable, because if they did, they would be lying. If you are in a tent, you needn’t be concerned about the weather outside the tent.
The fallacy of goretex working as they have claimed for 50/60 years is well known. So why would a company want to team up with them in this day and age to use their material in a sleeping bag defies imagination. Maybe the fabric comes cheap and there is a significant advertising budget?
Many companies I read about in the outdoor industry today are trying more and more venues to sell their products by embellishing what they supposedly can do. They simply do not know how to be truthful with the buying public.
So, someone may spend $1380.00 for one of these “no sleep down sleeping bags” [waste their money] or $295.00 for one of the Antarctic sleeping bags we make and never lose a minutes sleep.
