A NEW SURVIVAL BLANKET?
The blanket product described below has been called a space blanket for years. As a space blanket it never worked so why does the owner of this company believe his all seasons blanket will work? His lack of knowledge of heat loss is quite evident as you will see. Also, the name of the company is in my opinion misleading.
Survive Outdoors Longer Introduces All Season Blanket for Spring 2018
Survive Outdoors Longer® continues to evolve their innovative survival solutions and introduces the All Season Blanket for spring of 2018. This durable and versatile blanket reflects 80% of radiant body heat and can be used as an emergency shelter or for general camp use.
Radiant heat produced by any and all heat sources; the human body included and the heat produced will be absorbed by the first object it comes in contact with. If you were to place your hand within a quarter inch of the skin surface of a nude person you will feel the heat that is coming from the skin surface. This heat is radiant heat. If the person now has clothing on the radiant heat is no longer felt because the clothing has absorbed the radiant heat.
If you are in the field and are wearing two or three layers of clothing how is it possible for the radiant heat to move through the layers of clothing for 80% of what supposedly gets out to be reflected back to you? The answer to that question is simple; the radiant heat does not get out to the reflective materials surface in the first place.
It is obvious that the owner of the company does not know about heat loss!! It will do him well to read on my web site the article seen on the home page titled; “HOW TO STAY WARM” a guide to understanding insulation and heat loss.
In unexpected emergency situations, use the All Season Blanket (80” x 64”) to rig a shelter, wrap around someone to prevent hypothermia, or use the bright orange color to signal a rescue team. Waterproof and windproof, the All Season Blanket is made with polyethylene and a tough laminate fiber. Need warmth while adventuring in cold weather or during an emergency? Survive Outdoors Longer’s blanket has a vaporized, aluminized coating that reflects 80% of radiated body heat offering warmth and protection.
To use this product to prevent hypothermia is insanity even in Key West Florida. Further evidence of the lack of knowledge that permeates this company!
This product will not present to you warmth in any cold weather situation; for anyone who happens to buy this product thinking it will offer a warmth retention covering will definitely be disappointed. Again they mention that 80% so they can convince themselves, maybe?
More than just an emergency item uses the product as a sunshade, gear cover, picnic throw, and more.
I agree that this item will do well for use as is described in the above sentence.
As you can see it does not take very long for a company to come out with a product that they have not researched. This is what I refer to as unconscious behavior on the part of the management of the company. They simply do not understand that they are offering a product under false pretenses. People’s lives can hang in the balance if they use this particular product in a “cold weather” situation as they state in their verbiage. The blanket has survived!
I recall a forest fire in the mountains east of Grand Junction several years ago where 10 or 12 forest fire fighters had to get into tents with these reflective blankets to ward off the heat from the fire that they could not out run. All of them died because the reflective blankets they were carrying did not do anything.
As I see it the information that is propagated throughout the outdoor industry is misinformation with respect to products that fall into the technical area of use. Anything to do with insulation, i.e. for the purpose of keeping people warm and comfortable is nothing more than talk. They take no responsibility for the lack of performance of the products the offer.
As the show progresses starting Wednesday I’ll see what else is being offered with erroneous information. Unfortunately the retail store buyers never seem to question what they are being told. Those being the case you can expect to see the same old products on their shelves only in different colors.
