Therm-a-Rest Ambassador Eric Larsen Influences Brand to Outfit the Extreme
Influence should come from people with knowledge; as you will see he has none.
SEATTLE, WA (June 27, 2017) — Seattle-based Therm-a-Rest has been helping extreme mountain athletes and explorers stay warm and comfortable at camp for decades. In 2018, Therm-a-Rest introduces a sleeping bag built to endure the coldest destinations known to man.
I have known of this company for years and I never knew of them making anything to keep people warm in cold conditions and now they are introducing a sleeping bag built for “the coldest conditions known to man”. As you will read they are saying -20 degrees F. I just learned that I have been incorrectly making sleeping bags and clothing for temperatures that perform at -60 degrees F, but that temperature does not exist since -20 degrees F is the coldest temperature known to man.
Designed with polar explorer and mountaineer, Eric Larsen, the Polar Ranger™ -20F/-30C is the only bag you’ll need when going to sub-zero temps. Using 800-fill Nikwax Hydrophobic Down and ThermaCapture heat-trapping technology throughout the entire bag, the Polar Ranger is equipped with every essential you need for extreme-cold camping. Touches like overlapping draft tubes, side vents and a unique synthetic snorkel hood designed to funnel air in a way that keeps condensation from chilling your face, are just a few ways the Polar Ranger keeps you warm and secure at frigid camps.
Eric Larsen maybe an experienced mountaineer and good at it, but he has no more knowledge of what it takes to make a sleeping bag for any temperature, let alone -20 degrees F than a chimpanzee. He has no knowledge of the fact that applying a dwr to down is not any different than applying dwr to fabric. We know that all Gore-Tex and other materials like Gore-Tex must be water repelled since the dwr which is an acronym for durable water repellent finish. Obviously “durable” it is not. so much for putting it on down which has proven over time it is an unacceptable insulating material below 32 degrees and only good when there is no moisture, which is present all of the time since we give off moisture.
“On an expedition, aside from polar bears, my primary worry at night is warmth,” said Therm-a-Rest ambassador, Eric Larsen. “Having the right sleep system can mean life or death. Working with Therm-a-Rest to create the Polar Ranger meant years of their trusted technologies mixed with my polar expedition experience to create the best new negative-degree bag on the market.” Hear more from Eric Larsen on his experience with the Polar Ranger by following this link.
I agree with this fellow about having the “right sleep system” such as the Wiggy’s Flexible Temperature Range Sleep System otherwise known as FRTSS. This is a single bag not a system. Obviously this fellow has never used a Wiggy bag, had he; he would then have used the very best sleeping bag on the market regardless of temperature.
The new extreme-weather sleeping bag weighs in at 3 lbs 3 oz in the regular size. Further features include top-zip entry, quilt and blanket loops for extra layering, SynergyLink™ connectors to integrate bag to mattress, and a Toe-asis™ foot warmer pocket. Step inside the new Polar Ranger -20F/-30C yourself at the OutDOOR Trade Show in Friedrichshafen this June and the Outdoor Retailer Summer Trade Show in Salt Lake City this July.
Now we are hearing of how dangerous this bag can be if anyone choses to use it in the -20 degree F temperature. At 3 lbs 3 oz it is impossible to keep you comfortable at that temperature!!!!!!!!!
Many years ago when Therm-a-Rest chose to get into the sleeping bag business they decided to use my slogan “SIMPLY THE BEST”. When I read it on their first ad I called them and very nicely asked that the refrain from further use or we would meet in court. They chose to end the use of the phrase; I do have a letter from them apologizing. About two years or so later they stopped making sleeping bags. In recent times they have dabbled back into the market place such as this disaster waiting to happen. They just haven’t learned a thing and it will be unfortunate for any sucker who buys one.
