WHY WIGGY’S BAGS ARE UNIQUE
But first I wanted to publish a comment that I received today on my u tube web site. Mike was issued a super light bag back then and he told me today several of the guys he served with are still using them. He was an officer in the US Army.

Jerry, I have to be honest. I have had my same issued 1991 Wiggy's sleeping bag for now going on 31 years! It has been all over the world and after retirement it still is the ONLY bag I use. It just simply friggen works! I never thought twice about it or even looked for another bag. Now that my wife of 28 years is finally getting into camping in and around freezing temps here in Colorado....we are actually going to purchase another Wiggy bag for HER! Mike |
Mike’s wife is ordering a super light as well.
When I developed the Lamilite in 1968, it was at a time when I was just starting to deal with companies that manufactured sleeping bags in the USA. I thought using the continuous filament fiberfill laminated versus quilted as they were doing would make a better bag. Little did I know how much better.
Anyway, I bought a sewing machine and made a cutting table in my bedroom and made the first laminated sleeping bag. Today in 2022, 35 years later I am making sleeping bags 5 days a week that are made exactly as I did in 1968. I use the same quality nylon, the same continuous filament fiber [actually today the quality of the continuous filament fiber is better] even the same molded tooth zippers. Imagine a product made from inception to production that has not changed for 54 years. This is what makes Wiggy's bags unique
This week is the start of 35 years at the same location in Grand Junction, CO.
I have a number of people to thank for the success of Wiggy’s but I will not try to remember names but companies that were small privately owned at the time. Northface, sierra designs, snowlion, twinpeaks, alpine designs, camp 7, even rei had a factory back then, alp sports and there were more that I fail to remember.
You see I was a complete failure trying to educate these companies about how I could process [laminate] the polar guard so they could make sleeping bags that looked like the sample I was carrying around the country showing them. I did this until 1974 when disgusted with their attitude I decided to end the efforts and do what I wanted to do. Go sailing, and that lasted for 18 months.
After which I got back to what I wanted to do to earn a living and that was to make sleeping bags. I had a good sewing teacher partner in my first company. I them left and built a laminating machine which is still in use today. I then started making sleeping bags again that are exactly like the first one I made and all of the bags I made at my first company Olam.
By the way I do not have the first bag I showed the companies I wanted to sell to but I do have the second bag I made for my boat. It hangs in the showroom.
Why I am thanking all of the people who worked in the industry back then is because had I not become a manufacturer selling to the general public I would not know as much as I do about the Lamilite as I do.
These companies had they made any bags in my method they would never have known how to sell them, the buyers would never have had the experiences as those who have purchased from Wiggy’s have and continue to have. They would have looked at ways of making the bags prettier, more eye appealing, destroying what works.
I would never have the feedback from users because the way the bags were supposed to be made would have disappeared. The people working at or for these companies had no interest in learning about the performance capability of the Lamilite.
Ultimately, I was left to my own devices and the trust of what people would tell me about their experience with their Wiggy’s bag. As time has gone by and sales have boomed more and more people have written to me about their experience and in so many situations the experience is the same. I prefer not to recount any but refer you to reading the testimonials for yourself. There you will become aware of the number of people who have had the same experience.
I am certainly grateful for the letter that I received from Mike stating his experience while being on active duty but also the fact that his bag after 28 years is still doing what it was meant to do, keep him warm.
So, a big thank you to all who existed in the industry so many years ago who chose not to learn about what it takes to make the most important piece of equipment you take into the woods. The companies that sell their no sleep sleeping bags today primarily through retail chains are my best friends, you see as people who buy these bags learn that they do not work to keep them warm except those camping in Key West Florida will eventually find Wiggy’s.
