WHAT IF?

For weeks or longer a major topic in the news media has been tariffs. I have come to realize that tariffs are nothing more than taxes.

 If the US government adds a25percent tariff on all products coming from Canada that means the taxes already in place are increased by 25 percent.

 Upon being told that this is going to take effect the Canadian government says okay we will impose a 25 percent tariff on all goods coming from the USA into Canada.

 Like us having to pay more money for Canadian goods the Canadian population will have to pay more for American goods.

 But “WHAT IF” the Canadian government said nothing but left in place the current tax on American goods coming into Canada. The Canadian population will be happy. All the Wiggy products sold to Canadians today would be the same as they were six months ago.

 If the Canadian government were to institute a 25 percent tariff [tax] Wiggy products would be priced out of the market. Do not forget there is also a dollar exchange rate. If there were no tariffs at all the Canadian dollar is less valuable than the American dollar. For years I have spoken with Canadians where they calculate the exchange rate when buying products made in USA. Now adding 25 percent more kills the sale of Wiggy products.

The only way Canadians get around the taxes and USPS costs lest I forget is to get the item shipped to a USA location near the border so they can pick it up. In this case they do not pay shipping.

 I am at a loss as to why the Canadian government thinks they must do the same. Let the US government do as they want and don’t react to it.

 If this were done the American goods would not come off the shelves and orders for more American goods would stay in place. I have viewed in the news company owners, owners of small companies selling to Canadians would not have to scramble seeing orders cancelled. I am fortunate that the greater bulk of my business is in the USA.

 Is there a law that if one country institutes tariffs mean the country must do in kind. I do not think so. What actions would the country initiate the tariff increase if the recipient country says do what you want to or just says nothing and obviously just does nothing.

 I am a simple-minded small business owner and would like to see my business grow by selling to consumers worldwide but find that there are stumbling blocks that are beyond my control.

 I am very happy to have been able to secure domestic materials so I do not have to be concerned about tariffs.

 PS: The only entity that benefits financially is the government!!!
